Heavy Rains Possible As Tropical Moisture Moves In

There is a possibility for heavy rains near the area as moisture from what could become Tropical Storm Bill moves from the Gulf Of Mexico inland in Texas, and then moves near our region later in the week.  Here are possible impacts:

1. There is a 90% chance the system could become a tropical storm in the next 24 hours.  If it does, it will be named Tropical Storm Bill.  The moisture from this system could then move northward, closer to us, in the Thursday-Friday time period.

2. This system could bring heavy rains and flooding to Texas and Oklahoma, along with the Ozarks, 5 to 8 inches for some areas.  For our region, we're looking at possibly anywhere from a quarter inch to 2 inches of rain but of course there is the possibility of locally heavier totals.

3. Heavy rains and flooding are the main threats with this system!

These are the outputs of several computer forecast models.  You'll notice the majority take the heart of the system to our west and north.

There are 5 levels of risks: Marginal, Slight, Enhanced, Moderate and High Risk. Here's what they mean:

UPDATED: Risk of Severe Storms Saturday!

We'll have a risk of severe storms Saturday, especially Saturday afternoon as a warm front , followed by low pressure and a cold front move through the region.  I expect at some point, we'll be placed under a severe weather watch of some type, followed by a pretty good chance we'll see some storms which will likely reach severe levels.  That being said it remains to be seen how bad and how widespread they are.

The main threats will be large hail, along with damaging winds and possible tornadoes, so stay abreast of changing conditions and forecasts through the day, especially the afternoon!

Risk of Severe Storms Today-Tonight!

Watching for possible Severe Storms this afternoon and tonight!  The biggest threats are large hail and damaging winds, however a tornado or 2 can't be ruled out.  Also, heavy rainfall is possible!!!  The NWS Storm Prediction Center has us in the Enhanced Risk area for severe storms.

This is part of the NWS' reclassification of Severe Storms Risks. It used to be only 3 catagories: Slight Risk, Moderate Risk and High Risk. Now, there are 5 levels of risks: Marginal, Slight, Enhanced, Moderate and High Risk.  Here's what they mean:

Risk of Severe Storms Wednesday!

Well spring has just begun and we've already got some spring storms headed our way, including the slight risk of severe storms to move in Wednesday/Wednesday night! The best chance for severe storms will be Western Kentucky, Southern Illinois and SE Missouri.  The biggest threat with these storms will be large hail and damaging winds as a cold front approaches.  On the backside of the front, temperatures will dip and we'll only see highs in the 50s for Thursday early and temperatures falling through the 40s through the day.

UPDATED: Snowfall Forecast for Winter Storm

We are now under a WINTER STORM WARNING for Wednesday into Wednesday Night with possible  heavy snowfall amounts and possible large amounts of sleet!  Snowfall amounts continue to trend UPWARD!

Take time NOW to prepare for these possible impacts:

1. Flooding could be a concern today and tonight with heavy rainfall on saturated ground.

2. Travel could be severely impacted Wednesday through Friday with heavy sleet and snow followed by VERY cold conditions, so it won't melt until the weekend.

3.Walking and working outside could be hazardous with ice and snow causing problems with footing, along with very cold conditions.

4. Make provisions for outdoor animals and pets including heat, shelter and food/water.

We'll begin with possible heavy rains with the possibility of some localized flooding as the ground is already saturated and we're looking at possible heavy rainfall amounts!

Wednesday, we'll have the chance for snow, along with rain and a wintry mix before changing over to all snow later on Wednesday or Wednesday night.  Temperatures will be falling through the 20s throughout the day.  While it's tough to say how many inches of SNOW we will get, it's safe to assume we will get A LOT of precipitation, some in the form of sleet and some in the form of snow.  The best chance for snow will be Wednesday night.  We could wind up with moderate to heavy sleet followed by several inches of snow. We could be looking at anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of snow for most of the area.  Depends when/where we see the changeover to all snow!  There should be LESS snow north of the Ohio River, and perhaps a little LESS snow around the KenTenn into NW Tennessee.
This model shows snow, along with snow/sleet in Western KY and NW Tennessee at 9PM Wednesday evening.
Estimated snowfall totals forcast
This is from the NWS in Memphis. Keep in mind, the accumulation totals we're giving are sleet and snow COMBINED!  In this case, the KenTenn is looking at 5-10" total.

Thursday will be dry but VERY COLD, with high temperatures only in the low 20s and Thursday night, overnight lows will drop down to the LOW SINGLE DIGITS!

Friday We should warm up close to the freezing mark, in the low 30s, but travel could still be affected.  We won't start thawing in earnest until the weekend, with temperatures Saturday and Sunday ABOVE FREEZING! (Don't forget also, Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday morning)

Better news next week as temperatures return to closer to normal for this time of year!

Your can hear my forecasts each weekday on Newstalk 94.7, 95.5, 570AM and 1320AM, along with The Mix 94.7 and Willie 102.1.  Remember, when the power's out, you can still hear our forecasts and live reports on these stations, too.

Possible Wintry Weather This Week

Although part of the region has a bit of a chance for some wintry mix tonight, looks like a better chance looms Wednesday and Wednesday Night.  Ironically, we'll actually be warming Monday and Tuesday.  In fact, Tuesday, we're looking at temperatures approaching the 60s, along with showers and storms before the arrival of more cold air.

Wednesday, we'll have the chance for snow, along with rain and a wintry mix before changing over to all snow late Wednesday and Wednesday night.  How much are we talking about? Tough to say but possibly as much as 3-7" of snow and sleet!  After that, we'll have a cold Thursday before starting to warm up again heading into the weekend.
