Friday Through Sunday: Snow, sleet, freezing rain and heavy rain. Look out!

We're going to see a full range of  winter weather over the next few days!  It begins with snow on Friday.  Shouldn't be much.  In fact the latest data indicates it should be less than 2 inches IF THAT.  The problem is that as a warm front rises through through the area, we'll likely see a changeover to sleet and freezing rain!  We could see some sleet accumulation during the process, but once again, we're talking minor.    As for the freeing rain, it will be less than a quarter inch, more like a tenth of an inch. (As a frame of reference,  Its usually around a quarter of an inch ice coating, when branches begin to break off).  This is NOWHERE NEAR what we saw during the ice storm in 2007, where ice was 1.5 to 2 inches thick on branches...

It looks like we'll generally see LIGHT AMOUNTS of snow, sleet and freezing but unclear exactly how much, and we should indeed see ALL THREE before the changeover to regular rain.

After the freezing rain, Friday night, as temperatures continue to rise, we'll switch over to regular rain Saturday, and we could see lots of it.  We're talking 2-3 inches, on top of the melting snow, etc....so that brings flooding and flash flooding into play and that probably should be our biggest concern going through the weekend!  Be prepared!

More Snow /Winter Weather Possible...

We've got a couple of things of note which will be happening over the next 48 hours.  First of all, tonight, we could see another minor round of snow.  We're talking about an inch or 2 possible, but certainly nothing like Sunday night.

After that, MORE COLD air moves in, so that our HIGH temperatures on Wednesday and THursday will only be in the TEENS and our lows Wednesday night into Thursday morning will be BELOW ZERO!  After that, we'll begin warming  toward the weekend, with Saturday's highs making it into the 40s, but along with that, Friday into Saturday, we'll have a chance for freeing rain or snow, which should transition to rain as it warms on Saturday.

Winter Storm WARNING: Heavy Snow Possible!

As models continue trending snowfall totals higher for the winter storm tonight though Monday, we're now looking at snowfall accumulations in the 8-12 inch range for a good portion of the area! Snow should begin around Midnight, or shortly thereafter and continue through the day Monday.   The snow could stick around for a while too, with temperatures forecast to remain below freezing possibly the entire week!

It COULD turn out to be one of the biggest snowfalls here EVER.
 Biggest Snowfalls Recorded in Paducah:
Greatest single day snowfall: 14.0 inches on December 22, 2004
Greatest 2-day snowfall: 14.2 inches on Dec. 22-23, 2004
Previous record: 12.2 inches on Jan. 16-17, 1978
Biggest single day snowfalls in Paducah:
December 22, 2004: 14.0 inches
 February 15, 1993... 7.9 inches
January 16, 1978... 11.0 inches
March 6, 1967... 8.0 inches

There is a 70% chance of 8 inches or now or BETTER for most of the area

UPDATE on Possible Snowfall Sunday through Monday

Taking at look at the latest computer models, there is still some disagreement about how much snow we will get Sunday afternoon through Monday.   Here's what we're talking about, but KEEP IN MIND, THIS COULD CHANGE between now and then!
This model calls for 2-3" in our region.

This model calls for the heaviest: 6-10", which is probably overdoing it (I hope)

The Canadian model calls for 3-5" with heavier snowfall in SW TN and Central AR

Best advice: STAY AWARE of current forecasts as we head into and go through the weekend!  It will be COLD this weekend, with another shot of cold air on the air.  That much is certain!

Possible Winter Storm Monday-Tuesday

Well it looks like we could have a chance of a significant winter storm Monday into Tuesday, with several inches of accumulating snow, BUT it's still very early, an right now it appears the best chance for the heaviest snow could be to our south, in Tennessee.  Not going to put any graphics up yet, because still want to study it a little more and there is still some disagreement in the computer models.  In fact, one model in particular is still only calling for minimum snowfall, AND some of this precipitation should fall as rain, therefore cutting these snowfall totals.

Best advice: STAY AWARE of current forecasts as we head into and go through the weekend!  It will be COLD this weekend, with another shot of cold air on the air.  That much is certain!
